Here in Palm Springs, the weather is pleasant and around 70 to 80 degrees during the day. The snowbirds are here, there is lots more traffic and more people just about everywhere. Essential oil of Strawberry? Not!

Strawberry essential oil? No such thing! Naturally Derived Aroma Chemicals or Nature Identical Oils? Phhhleease! No wonder the general public is confused. What certifying, Licensed body was used? Everything on this earth has been naturally derived at some point, but that doesn’t mean it’s natural. The word “natural” has lost its meaning. People are gullible and will believe what someone will tell them. All of us that are in this business need to educate our customers what is an essential oil and what is a fragrance. Please people, do your homework. Just because a certain soapmaking supplier says it’s natural, take it with a grain of salt.

There is NO essential oil of strawberry, raspberry, cranberry watermelon, peach, pineapple or kiwi. If someone tells you they are essential oils, they are stretching the truth.

And don’t get me started on all the medical claims that some handmade soaps make. Handmade soaps can soothe the skin, but they will not cure anything. If you see such claims, they are not telling the truth. They just want to take your money and run.

Handmade soap will not cure excema, psoriasis, cystic acne nor will it remove scars. If that were true, soapmakers would be millionaires by now and pharmacies would be selling it behind the counter.

Gentle handmade soaps for gentle cleaning

Soap does not need to lather a lot to cleanse. We have been conditioned to think that if soap has tons of bubbles it must clean better. That’s not true. Soap like 100% castille or pure olive oil soap does not lather much, but it’s one of the most gentle soaps. It’s safe enough for babies, people with sensitive skin or people that have nut allergies.

Handmade, artisan soaps use ingredients like coconut, palm kernel, castor, olive and mango or shea butter. Lye, water, oils and butters create a chemical reaction called saponification. This creates soap and also naturally occuring glycerin. This glycerin is left in handmade soaps, unlike factory made commercial bars that take the glycerin out, so it can be sold as a separate ingredient.

Properly balanced handmade soap will clean your skin gently without stripping. In the olden days, most soaps made at home were harsh, so they made great soap for washing your clothes, but not your skin. Nowadays, soapmakers use a lye calculator that will tell you how much lye to use to saponify your oils, so the soap will be nice and mild.

Soap is normally cured for four to six weeks. During this time, water evaporates from the soap and the bar gets milder. Fully cured soap will last longer in your bath or shower then one which still has water in it. I advise a nice soap dish to keep the soap elevated and dry between uses as it has the full goodness of glycerin still in it.
